Origins

Joseph Lucas, born in Birmingham in 1834, began dealing in paraffin oil for domestic lamps in the 1860s before expanding into transportation.

In 1872, Lucas Industries was founded in Birmingham, UK, initially manufacturing bicycle lamps. By the early 1900s, Lucas had become a major supplier of automotive electrical equipment and began expanding into broader vehicle systems—including batteries and engine-related components.
